1. I believe it is because he was shocked by the fact that we were once "monkeys" and now we evolved and adapted into being "homosapiens". He was trying to emphasize the results of evolution over periods of time.
1.) Douglas Adams keeps on referring himself and the human race to monkeys throughout the chapter because they were somewhat like our species. We are the monkeys' descendants and thanks to their astounding advances in twig technology, we were able to arrive in canoes, then boats, and finally airplanes.
2.) The lemurs are still fighting for survival in this day and age evn though they are still on the lone island of Madagascar because they need to compete for use of the same habitat with fire and machetes and domesticated animals.
